The Health Benefits Of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is extracted from the flesh of the coconut, and has for centuries been one of the most widely used sources of fat around the world. It is also highly coveted for its medicinal properties.

Coconut oil is an energy supplying medium-chain triglyceride (MCT).

Our Western diet consists of mostly long-chain triglycerides (LCTs), which are not ready broken down and used as energy. Unlike LCTs, coconut oil is 2/3 MCTs, which bolster cell respiration and allow the mitochondria (the “energy generators”) within the cells to access greater energy in fewer steps.

Coconut Oil for Dieters and Athletes

A review by A. Jeukendrup et al. suggests that MCTs may be preferred over LCTs when it comes to reducing body weight.

One of the principle reasons put forth is that MCTs are oxidized as energy while LCTs are stored. Because MCTs are smaller molecules, they spend less time in your stomach and are more rapidly absorbed – even in the absence of lipase. This reason, along with a few other scientific bases, may explain why coconut oil is thought to reduce fat deposition.

Several studies show MCTs to stimulate the metabolism, enhancing physical and athletic performance. Due to this metabolic effect, these fatty acids are also known to increase thyroid activity, which helps promote weight loss.

Eating coconut oil prior to training is also thought to decrease muscle glycogen use, which increases your endurance levels – allowing you to train longer with more energy.

Lauric Acid

Coconut oil is rich in antioxidants, but the main ingredient that makes it such a powerful health promoter is lauric acid. At least 50 percent of the fat content in coconut oil is lauric acid, a fat rarely found in nature.

When consumed, lauric acid converts to monolaurin, which is known to have anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. Lauric acid is also found in breast milk, which helps babies build strong, healthy immune systems.

Coconut oil is a wonderful supplement for athletes, weekend warriors, pregnant and nursing women, and anyone looking to improve and enhance their overall health. At Ignite Naturals we use coconut oil in IN Extreme Energy, GSH Ignite ProSeries , GSH Ignite and Ignite Daily.
